What's Up for the Summer????

It's the end of May and for many parts of the country that means: School's Out!!!!! So what's next? Maybe sleeping a little later, planning a vacation, or just being with friends more. Hopefully it means more time outside and getting the kids more active. Not organized activities, but just active.
I've recently learned of some startling statistics that reveal the true state of condition among our children. Did you know that American children average between 6.5 and 7.5 hours of TV and/ or video games a day?!?! Did you know that 50% of our children have a television in their own bedrooms? WHY?
Give your child some great summer experiences. Spend time watching clouds, introduce them to mud, make them stay outside several hours a day, if not for most of the day, spend less money on lessons and more time creating imaginative play opportunities. Our children need to be more physically active and given time and space to just be kids.
Give me your comments on how you're spending the summer with your kids.

Hi there,

I have one son who's 4.5 years old. My Hubby and I both try to get him outside as much as possible and to get him as active as possible. With SPD, sometimes this is hard. He is overly sensitive to the sunlight, he's completely freaked out if a bee buzzes past his head, and he won't stay outside if our neighbor's dog is outside, 'cause it's yappy.

Still, we do our best! He went out for a long walk with my Hubby this afternoon and it was a gorgeous day!

Hours outside each day? Oh my, you don't live in Texas, do you? It was 105 here this week. That's a cool front because last week it was 109. Hehe.

We spend a lot of time indoors in our neck of the woods, but we don't spend it watching TV. We play trains, read books, have playdates (when that's possible), and so on. We do go to outdoor things, just early in the morning. The zoo is a favorite. We get year passes every year for our zoo.

My 8 yr old son wad diagnosed this year w/SPD. His happy place is in my hometown in NE Arizona. We had planned to spend the whole summer there this year where it was cooler, near a large pond/lake.(we live in the Phoenix area - too hot for 6-8 hrs outdoors). Since he had treatment scheduled all summer we only spent 2 weeks at two different times. After a day (beginning around 6 am) spent hunting frogs and snakes, fishing, boating, hiking and whatever else he could do outside, he would eat almost whatever I fed him and fall asleep immediately every night. This boy hated going back to his treatments 3x a week and then when school started, every weekend he asks if we can just go back to his happy place. When he was younger he was content to hunt bugs and lizards in our back yard. The world is bigger now and he wants to be the next Steve Irwin aka "Crocodile Hunter" .
